Google Calendar SMS Alerts

Google Calender is great and now it has got better. I discovered recently that Calendar now supports SMS messaging and I am now using this service to remind me to to do things like pay the phone bill, put out the bins and attend meetings. Check out Calendar at:

Google Gears

Google Gears is a Firefox browser extension that enables offline access to services that normally are only available online. It is used to store all images and other web page components from the admin area to the user’s PC, speeding up access and reducing unnecessary web traffic. Gears can be used with a number of Webapps such as GMail, Zoho and WordPress. Because of the offline storage that Gearrs provides, there is a noticeable speed increase when your Internet connection speed is slow and this makes your WordPress blogging experience more enjoyable.

After downloading Gears you will need to enable it under the “Tools” section of your WordPress admin account.

RSS feeds related to Linux

Can anyone suggest good quality RSS feeds related to topics that we are going to cover in class? Examples would be feeds from technical blogs or journals. We can aggragate these feeds on our class Start Page. If you have any suggestions please leave a comment.

USB Flash Drives

You will need a portable storage device for the lab so that you can bring your server builds home with you after each class. If you haven’t got such a device can I recommend the online shop MyMemory. I have bought goods from this company on a number of occasions and I have found that they provide a top class service.  Their prices are competitive and the price listed on the website includes postage to Ireland. So the price quoted is the price you pay.  Today, the following offers are available:

SanDisk USB Flash Drives – £19.99 DELIVERED
SanDisk 16GB Cruzer Micro U3 USB Flash Drive. The SanDisk Cruzer™ Micro includes U3 smart™ technology. Co-Invented by SanDisk, U3 gives you the ability to carry your files AND your software on a USB drive. Delivery : 1 to 3 working days.

Kingston USB Flash Drives – £10.99 DELIVERED
Kingston 8GB DataTraveler USB Flash Drive. DataTraveler USB flash drives are ideal for home office, small business, schools and promotions. They’re affordable and put mobile storage in nearly anyone’s hands. Delivery: 1 to 3 working days.

Remember that these prices are in UK sterling and you will have to convert to Euro. Does anyone know of a competitive Irish supplier?

CentOS

I have bookmarked a number of CentOS install and configuration resources to our Diigo group. Remember that CentOS is the same as Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5 so any quality links associated with that distribution would also be welcome, so start searching for quality resources.

Please bring a blank DVD and CD to the lab with you next week so that you can make a copy of the full distribution and the Live CD.

Free online storage

Dropbox is a service offering 2GB of free online storage. This could be handy for backing up files in College for retrieval at home. There are a number of other companies offering similar services, I use Dropbox, anyone with a better suggestion?
